For Spring Break of 2011- my sophomore year at PLU- I traveled to Haiti with a team through Puget Sound Christian Center/ Ignite Campus Ministry. The trip consisted of 10 days of doing worship conferences at the National Foursquare Church and nearby tent city. We also got to visit partner orphanages and do construction and food distribution projects.
For Spring Break of 2012- my junior year at PLU- I traveled to Haiti for the second time with a different team from Puget Sound Christian Center/ Ignite Campus Ministry. This time I got to help with details and planning which stretched me in ways that I have never been before- being in charge of finances and other details was not my "cup of tea" at the time. For this trip we did three days of VBS, as well as a lot of construction work. Similar to 2011 we also got to visit the partner orphanages. It was on this trip that I decided to return for a longer stay upon returning to the U.S.
While in Haiti for Spring Break of 2012 I had a desire to return to Haiti for a longer period of time.
Upon returning to the U.S. I talked with my parents and pastors and began the preparations to move down there.
I was convinced I was going at the end of April and was all packed up with no ticket. Then, about 10 days before I left, after leaving prayer on a Tuesday morning at PLU I felt compelled to check KAYAK.com for airline prices. That is when the unbelievable happened. There was a $250 ticket. I put it on hold, called my family, talked to my pastor that evening, and booked the one-way ticket to Haiti for April 27th- not knowing when I was going to return to the states. Two months into my stay in Haiti I found myself completely in love- with the Haitians, with the other staff I was working with, with the teams coming down- and that is when I experienced the whisper in my heart that in July I should return to my family in Idaho.
So, I ended up leaving Haiti on July 18, 2012 looking forward to the time I would return.
